A section of Oak Street in Vancouver will be closed to vehicle traffic in both directions for nearly two weeks to support crane work for Vancouver Coastal Health’s Vancouver General Hospital Operating Room Renewal Project.

The City of Vancouver says the 24-hour closure between West 10th and West 12th avenues begins Thursday, Sept. 10, and continues until Tuesday, Sept. 22. Drivers travelling through the area should expect delays.

West 10th and West 12th avenues will remain open during construction, although intermittent closures may occur. Access to area homes, businesses and health services will be maintained.

The city advises people visiting Vancouver General Hospital or other facilities in the 10th Avenue health precinct to use an alternate route and allow extra travel time. Drivers are asked to follow detours and no-parking and no-stopping signs in the closure area.

Bus service will continue, with some detours in place. Cyclists may continue using the West 10th Avenue bikeway, while pedestrians may still use Oak Street, though sidewalks could periodically close.

The closure comes as Vancouver General Hospital prepares for longer-term redevelopment. If plans proceed, almost all prominent buildings on the 34-acre campus are expected to be demolished and replaced over more than 30 years with taller, wider buildings for modernized and expanded health-care facilities.

The plans include the eventual demolition of the Jim Pattison Pavilion and its 299-foot tower, built in 1991, as well as the Leon Blackmore Pavilion buildings. At least 12 buildings are expected to be demolished over coming decades.

Earlier this year, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority submitted a rezoning application for a campus-wide master plan for the hospital, British Columbia’s largest and principal hospital. Formal public consultation began in February 2026 after a pre-application consultation last fall, when the health authority’s application details were made public.
