The Vancouver Police Department is appealing for witnesses and dash-cam footage after a man’s pant leg was set on fire in an unprovoked attack early this morning.
At about 12:43 a.m., the 57-year-old man was sitting alone on a park bench near Beach Avenue and Davie Street when an unknown suspect approached. Without warning or provocation, the suspect poured a liquid accelerant on the man’s pant leg, lit it with a lighter and fled. No words or threats were exchanged before the assault.
The man managed to stamp out the fire and was not injured. Police searched the area immediately but did not find the suspect.
The suspect was described as about five feet eight inches to five feet ten inches tall, with an average build. The suspect was wearing dark clothing and had something white around their neck. Const. Darren Wong called it a completely unprovoked, random attack and said police urgently need anyone with information or dash-cam footage to call the non-emergency line at 604-717-3321.
