Mike Hurley seeks third term as Burnaby mayor

Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley says he will seek a third consecutive term in the October 2026 civic election. He was first elected in 2018, defeating longtime mayor Derek Corrigan, and was acclaimed in 2022 when no challenger filed to run.

At least two candidates are now seeking the mayoralty: Burnaby First’s Heymann Yip and independent Michael Angelo. The campaign comes with just over two months before voting day.

Hurley said his record includes investments in housing, public safety and community amenities while keeping taxes down and the city debt-free. Before entering politics, he spent 30 years with the Burnaby Fire Department and later led the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund.

Housing and public safety are central themes of his campaign. During his tenure, the city advanced plans for a larger Burnaby RCMP headquarters, installed a wildfire early-warning system on Burnaby Mountain and developed a Community Safety and Well-Being Plan. His administration also introduced return-right protections for eligible tenants displaced by redevelopment of older rental buildings.

Hurley’s campaign says about 25,000 homes have been added during his eight years as mayor and notes the creation of the Burnaby Housing Authority to support below-market and rental housing. It is also highlighting current community-facility projects and a proposed Burnaby Innovation District focused on technology, research and high-value industries.

Three incumbent councillors — Pietro Calendino, Sav Dhaliwal and Alison Gu — have said they will not seek re-election. Councillors Joe Keithley, Maita Santiago, Daniel Tetrault and James Wang are running again with the Burnaby Citizens Association.
