VPD arrests Philadelphia fugitive after traffic stop
A Vancouver traffic stop led to the arrest of a 25-year-old man wanted in Philadelphia for rape and other offences. Vancouver Police say his custody has since been transferred to the Canada Border Services Agency.

Vancouver Police say a routine traffic stop last Friday led to the arrest of a man wanted on an international warrant for violent offences.
At about 10:50 a.m. on Oct. 2, a Vancouver officer stopped a white SUV with Alberta licence plates on East Hastings Street near Hawks Avenue after observing the driver using an electronic device.
A routine records check showed the driver was wanted on a Canada-wide immigration warrant issued by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). He was arrested and taken to the Vancouver Jail.
Police identified the suspect as 25-year-old Halil Abrahim Akbalik. He is currently wanted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for rape and other offences, and is also the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Toronto Police Service’s Fugitive Team.
Akbalik’s custody has since been transferred to the CBSA.
