Surrey advances proposed ban on invasive plant sales
Surrey council has backed bylaw changes that would ban licensed businesses from selling specified invasive plants, subject to provincial approval.

Surrey council has voted to advance proposed bylaw changes that would prohibit licensed businesses from selling specified invasive plants in the city.
The proposed restrictions would apply to nurseries, large retail chains, aquarium suppliers, florists and other commercial sellers. Species named in the proposal include English ivy, Scotch broom, giant hogweed and knotweed.
Mayor Brenda Locke said invasive plants threaten local ecosystems, drainage infrastructure and waterways. The city says plants that are attractive and easy to grow can spread beyond gardens into parks, forests, waterways and other natural areas once established.
The complete prohibited-species list would draw on plants identified by the province and the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver. City staff will consult businesses before submitting the bylaw changes to the provincial government, whose approval is required before a ban can take effect.
