The City of Burnaby says the rebuilt Mountain Air Bike Skills Course in the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area beside Barnet Highway will open Thursday, Sept. 3. The city has asked riders not to enter the park before then while final work is completed.

The public bike park redevelopment was announced in 2024 and construction began last fall. Burnaby describes the facility as a world-class mountain biking destination and one of the largest and only outdoor wooden pump tracks that is free to the public.

The original Mountain Air Bike Skills Course opened in 2008 on a 2.7-acre parcel at the mountain’s north end. A March 2024 report to Burnaby City Council said redevelopment was required to support continued community use. Initial estimates put the project’s cost at $4.72 million, an investment intended to keep the amenity safe and relevant to present and future riders.

Pemberton-based Velosolutions Canada West received the design-and-construction contract. The redeveloped site includes a BMX jump section with berms, jumps and a gradual return loop; a flow-trail section with two progressive lines for different skill levels; a flow-trail and pump-track area with berms, rollers, jumps and drops; and social and gathering spaces.

The city says riders of all ages and abilities, from beginners to advanced mountain bikers, will be able to develop skills in a safe, controlled setting. Velosolutions Canada West and Pumptrack World Champion Niels Bensink posted previews online, with Bensink saying public opening was not far away.

Cypress Mountain Resort is also preparing to revive its downhill bike park. The westernmost ski resort in Metro Vancouver’s North Shore mountains is targeting summer 2027 to open a redesigned Cypress Bike Park on Black Mountain. Construction on the first phase is expected to continue through November 2026, weather permitting. A chairlift will carry riders and bikes uphill before they use purpose-built downhill routes back to the base.
