Maple Ridge RCMP to launch Operation Safe Start
Police will be present at every Maple Ridge elementary school during peak periods in the first two weeks of school, enforcing and promoting road safety.

Maple Ridge RCMP will launch Operation Safe Start on Tuesday, Sept. 8, to help keep students safe as they return to school. The campaign will place police at every elementary school in Maple Ridge during peak times for the first two weeks of school.
During the enforcement and education initiative, officers will check that drivers observe speed limits, do not use phones, stop for school buses and yield to pedestrians at crosswalks. They will also speak with children and parents about proper pick-up and drop-off procedures and making eye contact with drivers before crossing at marked crosswalks.
Const. Sirak Gebresellasie of the Maple Ridge RCMP Family and Youth Resource Team, or FYRST, said the team wants a smooth transition for all road users, particularly students, parents and school staff. He said reviewing basic road-safety reminders with family can make the busy start of the school year more positive.
Police say drivers must slow to 30 km/h in school and playground zones, watch for children crossing, avoid blocking crosswalks and use designated school drop-off and pick-up areas. Residents are also advised to avoid distracted driving, including mobile-device use, and allow additional travel time at peak school hours.
RCMP also reminded families that e-scooters are not permitted on Maple Ridge roads or sidewalks. Children should stay on sidewalks, look both ways before crossing and remain aware of their surroundings. Rules for micromobility devices are available on the City of Maple Ridge Micromobility page.
