Richmond School District is revisiting notable stories from the 2025/26 school year, highlighting student creativity, collaboration and community across its schools.

Student clubs and staff redesigned one school entrance with rainbow pillars and greetings in the languages spoken by its community. The entrance also includes an Indigenous artist’s work featuring “Welcome” in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓. At MacNeill Secondary, artist Amy (Yun Ru) Bao worked with students in after-school workshops on Home of the Ravens, a mural whose raven-shaped sky reflects themes including curiosity, creativity, challenge and belonging.

Elementary students gathered at Garry Point for the annual cross-country fun run. Younger participants ran 900 metres and older students ran up to 1,600 metres after weeks of lunchtime practice; every runner received a ribbon. Outdoor education students also put camping skills to use during an overnight trip to Deas Island, learning tent setup, knots and fire-building while working through a leaking-tent challenge.

A separate mural project, developed through student consultation, depicts local rivers, mountains, plants and animals. Artist Ben Evely showed learners how sketches, projection, paint mixing and layered painting developed into the finished work. Medical Sciences students meanwhile practised triage scenarios, rotating through patient and responder roles to build observation, communication and decision-making skills.

The district also highlighted an environmental club’s litter collection and recycling-focused stewardship work, as well as a senior food class’s multicultural cooking project. Students researching Brazil prepared peri-peri chicken, feijoada, Brazilian potato salad and brigadeiro, with Italian, Japanese and First Nations cuisines planned for later classes.
