Maple Ridge RCMP warn of counterfeit cash circulating in city
Police have received at least eight reports in the past month involving counterfeit $50 and $100 Canadian notes used at local businesses, some of which suffered losses.

Maple Ridge RCMP say they have received at least eight separate reports over the past month of counterfeit cash circulating in the city. Counterfeit Canadian $50 and $100 notes were used at various businesses.
Most businesses identified the fraudulent notes and reported them to police, but some were left with lost income. Police noted that knowingly possessing or using counterfeit money is a criminal offence, and businesses that unknowingly accept it as legal tender cannot be reimbursed.
Frontline Sgt. Daniel Rettenbacher said police want residents aware of the recent fraud trend so they can protect themselves. He urged business owners to ensure staff know how to identify counterfeit currency, verify security features and follow proper cash-handling protocols. Customers should also use due diligence when accepting or depositing cash.
More information is available through the Bank of Canada's Counterfeit Prevention resources. Anyone with information about counterfeit currency or who wishes to report a crime can contact Maple Ridge RCMP at 604-463-6251.
