Elkerton and MacDonald are running for mayor of Pitt Meadows

Every civic candidate participating in the City of Pitt Meadows’ Oct. 17 municipal election was invited to complete a brief profile for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News readers. The following are the two candidates running for mayor.

Janis Elkerton, a former councillor of 21 years, is running for mayor. The retired nurse and commercial building owner is 70 and has lived in the community for 42 years. She lives on farmland. Her listed contact details are 604-465-5541 and jelkerton@shaw.ca.

Asked what prompted her to run, Elkerton said out-of-control spending and the resulting exorbitant tax increases are unaffordable and unsustainable. She said she would bring a new level of fiscal responsibility and more open, respectful communication.

Incumbent Mayor Nicole MacDonald has held the office since 2022 and served as a councillor from 2018 to 2022. The 47-year-old notary public and retired police officer has lived in the community for 20 years and lives in central Pitt Meadows. She can be reached on Facebook at “FB Mayor Nicole MacDonald - Pitt Meadows” or by email at niclinmac@gmail.com.

MacDonald said she ran for mayor in 2022 because she loves the community. She is running again because its progress matters, as does the work ahead: keeping Pitt Meadows safe, affordable and connected, while staying true to what makes it special.
