Maple Ridge salmon group asks public to protect returning sockeye
The Alouette River Management Society says the first returning sockeye has reached its fish fence and is asking visitors to give migrating salmon space.

The Alouette River Management Society says sockeye salmon are returning to the Alouette watershed after their migration from the Pacific Ocean. The group has captured the season’s first returning sockeye at the ALLCO fish fence and reported it was in excellent condition.
The society is asking people near the river to give salmon ample space, avoid walking through shallow gravel where fish may be resting, and be mindful of their effects on migrating fish when in or near the water.
It also asks visitors to keep dogs out of the river near salmon when possible and to leave no trace. The organization said the fish have travelled thousands of kilometres to reach the watershed and need room to complete their journey.
