Richmond school district offers safety and wellness tips for darker winter mornings
With British Columbia now staying on Pacific Time year-round, winter mornings will be darker than in previous years. The Richmond School District is urging students, families and drivers to take extra care on school trips and around neighbourhoods.

British Columbia now remains on Pacific Time year-round, so winter mornings will be darker than in previous years. Students are encouraged to take extra care when travelling to school in the darker hours. Parents, caregivers and other drivers are also asked to be cautious around schools and in neighbourhoods.
**Walking, biking and scooting**
Wear bright or reflective clothing, and use bike or scooter lights when needed. Use marked crosswalks, sidewalks and bike lanes. Stay aware of your surroundings and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
**Driving**
Slow down and use extra caution around schools and in neighbourhoods. Watch for pedestrians, cyclists and scooter users. Use designated drop-off areas and follow parking and traffic signs near schools.
**Sleep and well-being**
Keep a consistent sleep schedule and continue getting up at your usual time for school. Spend time outdoors during daylight and stay active. These habits can help support energy and well-being through the winter.
