Maple Ridge school trustee candidate Emily Haugen pledges stronger literacy and numeracy supports
Emily Haugen says she would advocate for stronger literacy and numeracy learning, supports for diverse learners and planning for enrolment growth if elected school trustee.

Maple Ridge resident Emily Haugen is seeking a school trustee seat in the upcoming election, pledging to advocate for stronger literacy and numeracy learning, better supports for diverse learners and planning for enrolment growth.
Haugen, a new mother and business owner, holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of New South Wales in Australia. She has nearly a decade of experience with non-profits as both a board member and employee. She said that experience has taught her how to govern well, manage resources responsibly and turn good intentions into results.
She said every student deserves an opportunity to succeed. While the district’s elementary and high schools were among the reasons she moved to Maple Ridge, and graduation rates are above the provincial average, Haugen said there is still room for improvement.
Haugen said she would seek more programs, staff and resources to remove barriers for diverse learners. She also wants proactive planning to ensure school space keeps pace with growing communities. A self-employed communications consultant and founder of a yoga mat and accessories business, Haugen said she would focus on students, families and the educators who support them if elected.
