Greg Moore Youth Centre marks 25 years of youth programs and community connections

The City of Maple Ridge is inviting residents to celebrate 25 years of the Greg Moore Youth Centre (GMYC) on Friday, Oct. 2. Since opening in 2001, the centre has offered local young people a place to connect, build confidence and skills, participate in programs and create lasting memories.

The celebration at GMYC, 11925 Haney Place, begins with an all-ages open house from 3 to 6 p.m. The event will include remarks from the mayor and past and present youth members. Visitors can explore the centre, meet staff and community partners, learn about current youth programs and attend a barbecue beginning at 5 p.m.

A youth celebration follows from 6 to 9:30 p.m., featuring games, prizes, activities and other surprises. Mayor Dan Ruimy said the centre has become an important community space that has made a difference in the lives of many Maple Ridge residents.

Developed through a youth-led community process, the two-storey, 16,000-square-foot facility was among the first dedicated youth recreation spaces of its kind. It continues to offer drop-in activities and registered programs, with amenities including climbing and bouldering walls, an indoor skateboard and scooter park, a podcast room, and a multi-sport court and lounge with games.

Recreation Manager Tara Berdej said the anniversary recognizes those who helped shape the centre while welcoming a new generation of youth. GMYC has received several awards, including the B.C. Parks and Recreation Facility of the Year Award and a Child and Youth Friendly Community Award for innovation.
