Construction begins this week on Maple Ridge’s Port Haney Multi-Use Pathway, a riverfront route planned to extend from Port Haney Wharf to Kanaka Creek Regional Park.

The five-acre site, once used for log sorting and acquired by the city in 2021, lies between the Haney Bypass and the Fraser River. The city and the province’s Growing Communities Fund are funding the project.

The pathway is intended to provide a safer, more accessible route for walking, cycling, running and rolling along the Fraser River, separated from vehicle traffic. Plans include visitor parking, lighting and entrance improvements. It is also part of the long-term Experience the Fraser vision for a connected trail network from the Salish Sea to Hope.

Public engagement in October 2023 found 83 per cent of survey respondents liked or loved the concept, while 80 per cent said they use the city’s existing multi-use pathways. Construction is expected to take about nine months, with an opening anticipated in spring 2027. The route will connect to the edge of Kanaka Creek Regional Park, which Metro Vancouver recently expanded by 3.5 hectares.
