The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation into a Maple Ridge shooting after the victim died from his injuries. Investigators believe the shooting was targeted and involved people who knew each other.

Just after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, Maple Ridge RCMP responded to the 11400 block of 236 Street and found a 56-year-old man inside a vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and died on Monday, Aug. 31.

IHIT is working with the Maple Ridge RCMP Serious Crime Unit, Integrated Forensic Identification Services and the BC Coroners Service to determine the circumstances of the shooting. Police said the victim’s name will not be released because it is not needed to advance the investigation.

Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT said the Maple Ridge RCMP Serious Crime Unit had conducted a thorough investigation before the victim’s death. She said IHIT investigators are now positioned to lead the homicide investigation and will continue speaking with the man’s family and friends to understand his activities, relationships and movements before his death.

Anyone with information can contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
