Maple Ridge RCMP say specialized units have been focusing on alleged drug trafficking, street disorder and property crime in the city’s downtown core this summer.

During four days of proactive patrols between late June and early July, the Strike Force Unit seized more than 100 grams of fentanyl, 45 grams of methamphetamine, 43 grams of MDMA and 20 grams of crack cocaine, police said. Six people were arrested on allegations of drug trafficking and two others on outstanding warrants.

Police said one person arrested with a substantial quantity of drugs is being held pending an immigration hearing and could face deportation under the Immigration Act. Officers also seized 28 grams of methamphetamine while executing a search warrant at a local apartment complex on Aug. 7.

The Crime Reduction Unit arrested seven prolific property offenders during a two-day retail shoplifting enforcement blitz in late July, according to police. Staff Sgt. Chris Kelly said the units will continue visible, proactive and data-driven policing while working with businesses and health, probation and corrections partners. Community safety dashboards are available online, RCMP said.
