ARMS begins salmon-habitat restoration at Coniagas Channel
The Alouette River Management Society has started work at Coniagas Channel near Jerry Sulina Dog Park to improve juvenile salmon rearing and eventual overwintering habitat.

The Alouette River Management Society has begun restoring salmon habitat at Coniagas Channel, a constructed side channel connected to the South Alouette River across from Jerry Sulina Dog Park in Maple Ridge.
ARMS crews and contractors are working through Friday, Aug. 21, to improve juvenile salmon rearing habitat. The longer-term aim is to create overwintering habitat and increase smolt production in the Alouette system.
Sediment buildup and invasive reed canary grass have reduced water flow and habitat quality in the channel. The work includes relocating fish before construction, removing sediment, restoring flow and placing large woody debris for cover and greater habitat complexity.
Native trees and shrubs are to be planted later in September, along with protective beaver caging. The project is supported by the BC Hydro Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program and the Pacific Salmon Foundation.
