Racial slur scrawled on Maple Ridge candidate’s election sign
A Maple Ridge school trustee candidate says seeing a racial slur on her campaign sign was deeply hurtful. RCMP documented a complaint and say they know of no other reports involving election signs in the city.

An election sign belonging to a Maple Ridge school trustee candidate was defaced with a racial slur.
Deepa Bissessur, who has signs at several locations around the city, said seeing the word written across one of them hurt. In an online post with a photo of the sign, she said her campaign signs had been thrown away and defaced with hateful language, including the N-word. She wrote that no one should have to experience racism, targeting or disrespect of that kind.
Maple Ridge RCMP confirmed they received and documented a complaint about the sign on the morning of Thursday, Oct. 15. They said they were not aware of any other reports of graffiti on election signs in Maple Ridge. Anyone with more information is asked to call 604-463-6251.
