Maple Ridge recycling centre begins accepting rigid plastics
Residents can now drop off many non-packaging rigid plastic items free at the Maple Ridge Recycling Centre, where they will be processed for reuse.

The Maple Ridge Recycling Centre is now accepting non-packaging rigid plastics for free drop-off, Ridge Meadows Recycling Society says. Eligible items include plastic toys, lawn furniture, totes, trays, crates, garbage cans, garden sheds and laundry baskets.
The centre is at 10092 236th St. in the Albion Industrial Park, near River Road. The material will be baled and sent to Delta-based Merlin Plastics, where it will be melted, pelletized and sold to manufacturers for new products.
Executive director Alda Nicmans said higher oil prices linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have increased demand for recycled plastic. Merlin Plastics vice-president Kevin Andrews said the partnership keeps material out of landfill while supplying recycled feedstock.
Vinyl siding, PVC piping, fibreglass and plastic items with metal frames or axles are not accepted. The centre is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays and statutory holidays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; its winter schedule begins Oct. 1.
